Hamburg Public Library Launches Bike Borrowing Program

Launch Date: Monday, August 24

The Hamburg and Lake Shore Libraries are two of three libraries in Erie County to bring this service offering residents an alternative mode of transportation that is environmentally-friendly, convenient, and free. 

Library card holders can borrow a bike just like checking out a book. The program promotes a healthier lifestyle by limiting the reliance on cars. It also encourages a stronger connection to the community.

This initiative is made possible through a partnership with the Statewide Mobility Services Program, a division of the New York State Department of Transportation. These programs lower transportation costs, support short trips, and make biking accessible for all. They promote active transportation and help advance local mobility, equity, and sustainability. 

Bicycles are generously donated by Wheels for Workers 716, a volunteer-based non-profit organization that collects unused bikes and bike parts, provides necessary repairs and servicing to make them functional, and coordinates their distribution.

Borrowing Procedure:

Adults ages 18 and older with a Buffalo and Erie County Public Library card in good standing can borrow a bike.

• Bikes are available on a first come, first served basis
• Maximum loan period is 1 week
• All borrowers are required to sign a First Time Rider Liability Waiver before taking a bike
• Bikes must be returned to the library location it was borrowed from 

Fees:

Lost bike fee: $250.00

Lost bike lock fee: $25.00

Inspired by similar programs offered by libraries downstate.

A Bike Borrowing Program allows for expanded transportation options and increased accessibility to residents of the community who may not have access to a vehicle. It also helps to promote a more environmentally-friendly community, at the same time, promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Bike Safety & Rules of the Road:

Based on guidance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

• Ride single file and with traffic, on the right
• Obey all traffic signs and signals
• Keep both hands on the handlebars (signal when turning)
• Stop and look before entering the street
• Walk your bike across intersections

Safety Tips:

• Wear appropriate safety gear
• Stay visible, predictable, and aware
• Make sure your bike is in good working order

Safety equipment is encouraged but may not be provided by all Bike Borrowing programs.

Erie County requires all riders to wear a helmet.

Lake Shore Book Club

Cookbook Club

For August, we will embrace summer with the book Martgaritaville the Cookbook by Carlo Sernaglia. For September, we will experience some Italian cuisine with the cookbook Milk Street Backroads Italy by Christopher Kimball. Those interested can choose a recipe to make at the circulation desk, and bring it in to share.

Adult Craft Night

Empire Passes

New York State Empire Passes are available for seven day checkout, allowing entry of one vehicle to most facilities operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The Empire Pass does not guarantee parking when the park is at maximum capacity. This pass may not be used for entrance by multiple vehicles at one time. This pass does not guarantee free vehicle entry into a park when special events occur. The Empire Pass does not include a waiver of fees for camping, golfing, and other special activities. Passes must be picked up and returned in-person to the owning library.

Health Kits for Kids

Thanks to a grant from WNYLRC and NNLM, we have health kits for kids!  These kits contain games, active play items, coloring pages, and a book to help teach kids about the human body and how to keep it healthy--inside and out.  The kits include:

• Emotions & Empathy

Each kit circulates for one week with one renewal and must be returned to a staff members, NOT in the drop box.  Stop in today for your kit and for further information.

Memory Kits

Do you have a friend or family member with Alzheimer's/dementia?  Do you work in an assisted living facility or nursing home?  If so, the Lake Shore Library has Memory Kits!

What are Memory Kits?  Memory Kits feature a variety of items to inspire memories, discussions, and interaction with people with memory loss issues.  Each kit comes with DVDs, CDs, games, and activities.  We also have a game backpack filled with fun activities to get people talking, laughing, and engaging their minds.  Kits can be checked out for one week with one renewal.  Please view our Circulation Guidelines for more information.
