Carew Sheldon
Carew Sheldon of Buffalo attended Manlius Military Academy, Manlius, NY, as a young man and returned home to attend Lafayette High School. He was a first Lieutenant for the North Church Cadet Corps and the Lafayette Student Militia. Enlisting in the Navy in July 1917 as a 3rd Class Radio Electrician, Carew quickly graduated to 2nd Class Radio Electrician and qualified for flying school. He was stationed in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Florida serving on many ships’ tours and, judging by the “little black book” he kept, he must have had “[several] girl[s] in every port.” Pages in this book are full of women’s names and some are alphabetically coded in ways he thought noteworthy.
