1,000 Book Before Kindergarten

1,000 Book Before Kindergarten

Good reading practices can start as early as birth. To help encourage our community’s youngest readers, many Library locations have started a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

How is reading 1,000 books before kindergarten possible?

It can seem like a hard number to reach, but some quick tips and practices can help:

  • You can read the same book and count it multiple times. Young minds grow best with repetition. So if you read “Good Night Moon” every night for 10 days in a row, congratulations! That counts as ten books.
  • Books do not have to be finished in one sitting. Sometimes our friends need to move and will walk away. Developmentally, that is where they are. You can continue to read out loud and count the book, or you can put it down and come back later.
  • Routines help kids regulate their behaviors. Pulling out a book at bedtime helps with reading goals, but it can also help your child transition from play time to sleep time.
