Acquisition Information

The Michael Gelen Print Collection was acquired by the Rare Book Room of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library from Michael Gelen in two accessions. The first consisted of 30 broadsides created for the Irish Classical Theatre; these were donated by Robert North in October, 2007. The second accession was acquired from Michael Gelen in September, 2009. See the Rare Book Librarian for itemized lists of each accession.

Biographical History

Michael Gelen is an illustrator and graphic designer. He describes his technique: "All projects begin with pencil sketches; once a tight sketch has been approved, it is usually finished digitally, in either Adobe Illustrator of Photoshop, on a Macintosh computer."* Gelen's work has appeared in Print magazine and Communication Arts Illustration Annual. He owns Inkwell Studios in Buffalo, New York.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains giclee prints created digitally with archival inks and papers. Images relate to businesses, places, and architecturally significant buildings in Buffalo, New York. Most prints are signed by the artist. A portion, theater broadsides created for the Irish Classical Theatre, is framed and noted as such.
