The Wonderful Wizardry of Baum Exhibit at Downtown Library

Free & Open to the Public - Now - Summer 2014

Follow the yellow brick road! The downtown Central Library at 1 Lafayette Square hosts a new exhibit featuring the 100-year-old works of author L. Frank Baum (1856-1919), best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Just one book started it all. With the children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, author L. Frank Baum created an abundance of iconic images, sayings and memories for children and adults alike, which continues to this day.

The Wonderful Wizardry of Baum exhibit showcases the original canon of 14 first edition Oz books written by Baum, from the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s Rare Book collection. Wizard of Oz collectibles, and other illustrations and publications also take us down Baum’s yellow brick road, exploring his early life which began in Chittenango, New York, through to the writing and marketing of the beloved Oz stories. Displays in the downtown Central Library’s Ring of Knowledge and the Grosvenor Room, as well as on the Library’s main floor, feature Oz-inspired graphics, Oz-related items from the Library’s Music Collection - including display pieces from Buffalo-born Harold Arlen, composer of the iconic Academy Award winning song “Over the Rainbow” and a pop culture display infused with trivia from the classic 1939 MGM movie musical starring Judy Garland.

On Saturday, February 1, Oz themed family programming will complement “Take Your Child to the Library Day” at the Central Library, as well as at other Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries throughout the 37-member Library System.  Plus, a series of lunchtime and weekend Oz-related programs is also being scheduled.

Central Library is open 7 days a week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sundays from 12 noon – 5 p.m. There are no Sunday hours in the summer.  For more information - 858-8900 or www.BuffaloLib.org.
